Chief officer for business and individual tax from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Jonas Makwakwa has resigned with immediate effect. His resignation became effective on Wednesday 14 March 2018 at 11:00.
Tom Moyane said “Makwakwa has indicated that he is resigning for personal reasons”. Moyane also announced that the Hawks will continue to probe Makwakwa even though he has resigned.
Makwakwa was suspended on money laundering accusations following the release of a financial intelligence report and the matter was investigated by law firm Hogan Lovells, they were hired by the SARS after Makwakwa’s suspension.
The report that was submitted by the law firm indicated that Makwakwa was not guilty which was issued out at a disciplinary that was held. He then returned to the tax collection agency in 2017 October after a lengthy suspension.
